Sometimes I feel that shortcut icons is very ugly and annoying in Windows XP. I bet you felt like that too. Well I found the solution and its very safe since it is a built in feature in Microsoft own power toys.
Just download TweakUI from this page: Microsoft Powertoys TweakUI. You can also find more of Microsoft Powertoys at the page.
To remove shortcut icon:
Open TweakUI->Explorer->Shortcut.
Now choose your selection.
- Arrow(Show shortcut arrow)
- Light Arrow(use small arrow, looks ugly too)
- None(remove the shortcut arrow completely)
- Custom(You can set your own shortcut arrow)
The only drawbacks is that you cannot diferentiate application from shortcuts. The only way to check it is too right click it, choose properties and it will tell whether it is shortcut or application.
